Samantha had been disappointed the day before, because Matt Campbell hadn’t been working at the restaurant. They learned he had traded shifts with a friend and would be working the next night. That was why Samantha and Kate were at the restaurant again.

Kate spotted Campbell as they walked in and smiled at Samantha. “He’s here. You’ll get your chance to talk to him.”

They made certain to sit at a table in the section Campbell was working. After sitting, Samantha complained about not feeling well. Kate looked over at her with a concerned expression.

“What’s wrong?”

“I don’t know. I feel jittery and my palms are sweating.”

“It sounds like you’re nervous.”

“Is that what being nervous is like?”

“You’ve never been nervous about anything before?”

“I guess not.”

Kate grinned at her. “You’re a little weird, Samantha, but I really like you.”

“I like you too,” Samantha said, then she swallowed nervously as Matt Campbell approached their table.

Campbell lowered himself on his haunches when he reached them and smiled in greeting. Samantha felt her heart beat faster and sent him a silly grin in return.

“What’s up, ladies?”

Kate looked over at Samantha, expecting her to say something. Samantha opened her mouth, but no words came out. Kate began speaking so things wouldn’t get awkward.

“I’m Kate and this is Samantha; we go to the same college as you.”

“Yeah. I’ve seen you around, Kate.” Campbell looked at Samantha. “And you, you’re the little girl who skipped a few grades in high school, right?”

Samantha said, “I…” and that’s all she said, as she seemed to have difficulty finding her voice.

Kate ordered the same things the two of them had tried the night before. They had both enjoyed their meals and figured they would get the same meals again. Only Samantha would eat what Kate had the night before, while Kate did the same. That way, they could each try something new, while knowing it would be good.

Campbell went off to give the kitchen their orders. When he was gone, Samantha leaned back in her seat. Her face had reddened. Embarrassment was another new experience for her.

“Are you okay?”

“I couldn’t talk. Being so close to him made me so nervous.” She moaned. “And then he called me a little girl.”

“He didn’t mean anything by it, Samantha. It’s just that you’re younger than we are.”

“Did I make a fool of myself?”

“No. He probably thinks you’re shy.”

“I’ve never experienced anything like that before. I don’t like it.”

“I had something similar happen to me when I was your age. I wanted this boy in high school to ask me to the prom, so I made sure to run into him in the halls.”

“What happened?”

“I froze up the way you did. It’s natural when you like someone a lot. Look how my brother acts around you; it’s the same thing.”

Campbell returned to their table with their drinks and a plate of bread and butter. Samantha thanked him for doing so, and he smiled and told her she was welcome. After he left to see to another table, Kate congratulated Samantha.
